QUEENSLAND 29ER STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

As part of our lead up to the ISAF Youth world championships we decided for regatta practice we would enter the 29er states in Queensland. Having never sailed a 29er before we went into the two day regatta having no expectations of were we should place. With a high quality fleet with national champions and state champions all attending we new it was going to be tough.

Race one started with approximately 5-15 from the south east. The wind was quite patchy with some big wind shifts coming across the course at various stages of the race. We started the race well with a clean start on the pin and rounded the top mark in second place with third, fourth and fifth a boat length behind. With another upwind and downwind to still do we unfortunately dropped back to fifth place by the finish line. The next race we place another fifth again just behind the leading bunch. We where struggling on the downwind legs mainly just trying to get angles right. The last race of the day was another average score of a fourth place. The main positives that we could take out of the days racing was the fact that we where getting clean starts and improving as the day wore on. The final day of racing was a light breeze with puffs of no more than 10 knots coming down the start area. Race one started with us having a awesome start on the pin and leading the race from the point on wards. The next race was also similar with the left hand side of the race track paying and the pin end of line being favored we decided to start on the pin and we also finished the race in first place again. The next two races followed with another to two wins. Not to soon down the last downwind wind leg we calculated that we were winning the overall point score on count back. We held our lead to the finish line and won the Queensland 29er state championships. We would like to thank all of our supporters and sponsors and the 29er association of Queensland for all of there help.
